How Can I Stop Getting Spam or Phishing Emails?
You are probably used to being getting so many of spam or phishing mails regarding pharmaceutical products, credit services and various adult services.
Have you ever tried to take a simple step or precaution using a spam filter to reduce your email cluster?
Let’s first learn about what is spam and phishing and how can we reduce them getting into our inbox.
What is Spam?
Spam is referred to as Junk mail for a reason. It’s been existed from a very long time.
It’s been used to sell goods or services to a wider market of consumers than have expressed their interest in such products or services.
Spammers bulk deliver their deals hundreds or thousands at a time after collecting the email addresses of a large number of people.
Prayer chain forwards, vouchers, adult material, donation solicitations, and unwanted newsletters are all examples of spam.
They are normally of a commercial nature and are not malicious in any way.
How to protect yourself from Spam Mails
While spam mail is difficult to prevent, using proper anti-spam software can significantly reduce, if not completely remove, the amount of spam in your inbox.
Anti-spam filters can learn which messages are legitimate and which are spam without the need for human interference.
If a spam filter ignores a spam message, the user will simply mark the message as spam. As a result, Spam filter adapts to the new threat for future references.
You will significantly minimise the dangers of spam mail by ensuring that it is filtered away from your inbox and other relevant email folders by introducing a proper Internet security protection suite to your emails.
What is Phishing?
Spam emails may not be harmful to your company or to your personal information, Phishing on the other hand is designed to harm your digital device and steal sensitive information.
The emails often seem to be from a trusted sender. They target banking credentials, passwords or other information of value.
How to protect yourself from them?
Firstly, hackers do get an email list in an unregulated, illegal market on the “dark web”.
The information comes from data leaks and fraudulent offers and surveys on social media or vial messages on instant messaging where users provide or participate voluntarily.
Common signs of phishing emails include:
- Misspelled words
- Discrepancies between the language of links and the URLs they direct to
- Requests for personal information
- Forms within emails
- Highly emotional or charged language
You can also defend yourself from phishing attacks by doing the following:
- Understanding the warning signs of phishing scams
- Emailing personal information is not a smart idea. When you’re uncertain if an email is valid, always refer to the sender’s website.
- Messages from unknown senders are not being opened.
- Passwords that are different
- Using an up-to-date antivirus solution
What can you do to avoid receiving ‘Spam’ or ‘Phishing’ mails?
As mentioned earlier, you really can’t control on receiving those spammy emails to your inbox but, you can always reduce the amount of spam
- Only provide your information on trusted sites
- Do NOT fill out the forms on surveys with fraudulent offers
- Every business or company has a privacy policy on their website. Check how they are sharing or using your information
- Never share or post sensitive information on forums
- Never open an email in spam folder
It all starts with you. You are the best defender to your email.
If you are using Microsoft Outlook, you can report the email directly by clicking on the “Report message” from the ribbon, and then select Phishing.
